With the summer comes the G-Funk. I wanted to pick a beat that exemplifies this great sub-genre, and it was a toss up between this and Warren G's "This is the Shack." Gangster Funk was derived from funk and boogie sounds of the late 70's and early 80's, the era I spend most of my time exploring as a DJ.

"You Know How We Do It" is one of the smoothest pieces of hip-hop out there. A tricked out guitar line reminiscient of the one in "It Was a Good Day" (another Cube classic) drifts alongside chopped drums and scratched vocal samples. The best touch is the ghetto-whistle synthesizer, a noise that defines the G-Funk genre in and of itself.

Exit - You Got to Put Your Head Down (Dal-Tex) by djspence50

Recorded my copy of this great piece of Texas soul (Humble, TX, to be exact...who knew?). Instantly catchy, especially that synth line. I love the one-take principle of older recordings (or best take principle--the point being that the song is one solid run through. It's a nice break from the excessive post-production that's common now). During the first five seconds, the synth goes slightly off key, but they roll with it. I dig little imperfections like that.

Anyway, this 1983 jam is amazing. Thanks to the fine folks at Friends of Sound for showing me the light. Please ENJOY Exit's "You Got to Put Your Head Down."

BIO:

In 2002, Spence began his DJing career playing the local house party circuit in his hometown of Austin, TX. His move to Lawrence, KS in 2006 brought new opportunities for musical expansion. Spence saw a gap in the local hip-hop scene and extended his role from performer to event organizer.

In April of 2009, Spence founded a monthly night at the Eighth Street Taproom dubbed "Get Foolish," an event showcasing local hip-hop. Over its year and a half long run the night grew to include electronic, folk and indie rock acts. As the primary host, promoter and resident DJ, Spence helped foster the local music scene while honing his craft.

During his time in Lawrence, Spence dove into the funk and soul music that defines his current sound. Together with DJs Godzilla and The Unknown Souldier, Spence crafted a new funk/soul night called "Bump & Hustle." The dance-fueled monthly developed a quick following at the Taproom, showcasing 45s and LPs not typically heard on the club/bar circuit.

Moving back to Austin, TX in the summer of 2010, Spence quickly reemerged in the Austin DJ scene with a fresh outlook and a renewed desire to share music. Now allied with local record stores Friends of Sound and BackSpin, Spence's name is a common sight on show posters across town. As a freelance DJ, he spins regularly at local venues and performs at wedding receptions, community events and other happenings.

In July of 2011, Spence will introduce a new monthly at Loft 718 that is sure to turn heads...more news soon!

Devin the Dude - "Doobie Ashtray" (prod. DJ Premier)

The collaboration between Devin and Premier actually makes total sense when you consider that despite all the NY, East Coast repping that defined Gang Starr, Premier is actually from HOUSTON.

"Doobie Ashtray" isn't particularly Southern in style, but it's one of Premier's best creations. Slower than most of his material to accommodate Devin's slow drawl, the beat bounces along with sparse guitar chops and an easygoing, almost melancholy vibe. An amazing beat that feeds a great song, one that got me through some difficult personal times. I'll always appreciate this one.

This is a great flip of a track by The Originals. Back in his pre-dropout, producer but not a rapper according to Hov phase, Kanye West churned out some quality chipmunk soul beats. On this one, he beefs up the semi-cheesy slow jam with a hard bassline and chops the sample to create a reminiscent, celebratory tone.

Since this marks the beginning of this feature, I should point out that the numbers have no importance. No rankings, just fifty beats I consider the best in whatever order they come up. I'll include the full track and the instrumental whenever possible.

I could be listening to some all-out hype material, but if this song comes on the shuffle I'm going to get contemplative and ease back for a moment. Not only do I consider this Hi-Tek's best creation, but its one of the most beautiful beats to emerge in hip-hop, period. The way the vocal samples float in and out, those sparse kicks and a syncopated sound that almost sounds like a tongue click. Shoot, it's a winner.

A tribute to a visionary

I've decided to put my other planned posts on hold to pay tribute to Satoshi Kon, one of my favorite film directors who passed away last Tuesday. The creator of films like "Paprika," "Perfect Blue" and "Tokyo Godfathers" was making significant creative strides with each work. His exploration of dreams, reality and the impact of media/technology continue to interest me, and I will be doing more research on his work in the future, hopefully in Japan.

Kon is one of the few people I considered a true visionary within the cinematic community. I am very saddened by his departure. As a tribute, below I've posted the introduction to the final paper I wrote for my Contemporary Japanese Film class during my last year of college. It's an exploration of Kon's "Perfect Blue." Traversing Real and Fantasy: The Animated Properties of Satoshi Kon's Perfect Blue

As Satoshi Kon's Perfect Blue begins we see people in futuristic, Power Ranger-like battle suits fighting against a generically evil-looking foe. Smoke flies as the characters trade dramatic barbs. Then Kon abruptly cuts to a wide shot, revealing that the action is being performed and taped in front of a live audience. Two kids run out of the auditorium complaining about what they just witnessed. “That was nothing like the stuff on TV,” one says. “That was so cheap,” the other yells back. In this opening scene Kon makes the power of illusion resoundingly clear. What separates the program these kids watch on television from this live performance is that the latter is more evidently a production. The actors are confined to the stage, there are no edits to polish the product and the bodily presence of other fans draws attention away from the action. In short, the illusion is spoiled. The live production's closer proximity to reality hinders its ability to generate immersion. The negative reaction to it from the children speaks volumes. They need the illusion to enjoy themselves. People want to be deceived.

When a viewer is drawn out of a film that attempts to maintain an illusion it is generally the product of poor film-making. It could be questionable production value, or perhaps an actor fumbling a line. However, some films intentionally draw viewers out of their confined worlds. Perfect Blue is one of them. The film chronicles the story of Mima Kirigoe, a young woman whose ambitions of making a pop star to actress transition become lost in a convoluted web of dreams and reality. Illusions are so powerful that they gradually pervade real life until the two become indistinguishable from one another. The confusion extends to us as viewers as Kon allows us “an unabashed pleasure in uncertainty and a conscious appreciation of illusion.”¹ As viewers we are put in Mima’s subjective position through Kon’s stylistic choices that complicate the narrative and toy with our own ability to discern the reality of the film. Through these means, Kon conveys how susceptible we all are to the power of illusion. In his intricate portrayal of dreams and reality and reflexive use of the animation medium, Kon communicates that as individuals we are responsible for navigating multiple planes of real and simulated existence to establish our own sense of identity.

I'm happy for many reasons these days, but especially with how well Get Foolish went last night. Stik and Katlyn were both great, lots of folks came out, and we had some serious fun. Kicked it with Godzilla and Ben K. (who's directing the "All You Hipsters" video) after the show. Talkin mess, shotgunning beers and some Ric Flair "WHOO" chops.

A quick show review as well. I saw Mike Posner and XV at Liberty Hall tonight, and the first song of XV's set pretty much epitomized how I felt standing in the crowd: "I don't fit in, I don't fit in." Surrounded by an endless sea of frat bros, cologne wafting in the air, girls crying next to me and dancing drunkenly offbeat. Not my crowd.

On a funny note the police came to arrest DJ Parle on a warrant at the beginning of the show. He came out later to pack his equipment up and a guy next to me yelled "Don't drop the soap!" Not my crowd.

The sound was far too low during XV's set, which was disappointing since I came to see him particularly. Nevertheless his energy was great. I really can't comprehend why dude doesn't have a record deal yet. Posner...meh. He's more Asher Roth than J.T. I respect his hustle though. I knew he had the frat appeal going for him (being a Duke student and all) but I didn't expect that heavy a saturation of bros. Just like XV I was a square in the circle.

Due to some scheduling conflicts, the "Planet Pluto" CD release party has been rescheduled for Thursday May 13th (STOP DAY EVE), and will be held at the Eighth St. Taproom as part of GET FOOLISH. Featured acts include myself, Cloud Dog, DJ Godzilla and others TBA. In accordance the release date of Planet Pluto is being pushed to May 13th as well. I'll release my full schedule of shows going down before the summer next week. Stay tuned!

is XV. Word's finally getting around about this guy, but if you don't know about him, take note. He proudly reps midwest (Wichita, KS) and consistently achieves quality and quantity in his work.

He also featured one of my EPs ("2008.0" by myself and Disco) on his blog a few months back as part of an 'I Have a Dream' mixtape effort, where he posted records from ANY rapper who sent them to him over a 24hr period. A dope MC who's still very grounded and intent on helping the scene. Check out his newest mixtape below.

The "All You Hipsters" video shoot will take place from March 26-28. A group scene will be included, so everyone is encouraged to come out for that. Location and time info coming soon. That video (directed by Ben Kimbell) and single will drop in early, early April.

The PLANET PLUTO release party is set for April 24th. That means the album is dropping on the same day. You heard me...

Time to ramble a bit. The album is coming together slowly. The release of "All You Hipsters," the first single & video will unfortunately be pushed back due to some recording snags. I can promise though, that you'll see/hear it before the month is over. I'm laboring over "Planet Pluto" more than any album I've done previously. I've got a certain vision for it, and most importantly I want you guys to appreciate it. Thanks for your patience.

I've been DJing a lot recently, and realized how much I still like it. Now, I must announce my official boycott of "ABC" and "I Want You Back" by the Jackson 5. I will not play either anymore unless specifically requested two months in advance. I will however, play "The Love You Save." Dig?

As a kid, I remember seeing his cartoons on MTV and getting the crap scared out of me...something about the style just creeped me out. It's very distinct, and 100% hand-drawn by him from my understanding. I'm surprised to know how many people have no idea who he is, so here's two samples of his work I hope you'll enjoy.

Wow. To all those who witnessed the mad fun that was last night: it was good dancing and drinking with you...among other things. Shout out to DJs Godzilla and Square Jordan for keeping the party live with me. My personal favorite jam of the night was "Kung Fu Fighting" by Carl Douglas. Based on the evening I truly believe that underwear parties are the future, haha.

Sitting here with a cup of coffee by my side trying to map out the week, I must remind you of my show coming up this week. GET FOOLISH, my monthly night at the Eighth Street Taproom, is hosting The Snuggle Bugs, Swayzorbladez, DJ Godzilla and any MC who wants to try their hand at spitting some bars during open mic for the first hour of the show.
